In his latest quest, Greg encountered all 19 of 19 species of breeding North American Owls! Greg is now working on 4 quarterly reports and a compilation video video for YouTube on “How to Find Owls”
Train your ear to hear their unique voices - their songs and calls. . Become an inquisitive and disciplined birder. Focus on a voice before you spot the bird - even when you cannot find the mystery vocalist. With practice instantly recognize many species by their voices.

These visual clues often make it possible to identify and distinguish similar species, even at considerable distances.
I recently participated in Portland Audubon's Sauvie Island Exploration and Field Birding Class. Greg Baker and Ricky Allen are a good team and paid attention to everyone in the group. Now I can more easily identify certain birds and have a deeper understanding of their unique characteristics.

Greg’s willingness to share his knowledge of locations such as the areas surrounding San Diego and the remote Okanogan Region of Washington has helped me net numerous lifers and some great photos!

On a recent sunny morning in Greg Baker's modest Northeast Portland garden, I heard eight native birds sing out. They know a good thing when they see it. Baker, an avid birder, has created a little paradise for wildlife (and his family) while reducing his property's ecological footprint. His actions recently earned his garden certification with Portland's Backyard Habitat Certification Program, a joint venture between Three Rivers Land Conservancy and the Audubon Society of Portland.

Greg’s "Good Birding Adventures" online presentations are an excellent complement to learning the birds through glimpses in the field, with guide book in hand. These presentations provide a prompt to which species can be found at particular locations and in specific seasons in the Portland area and elsewhere across the US. Most importantly they provide audio clips of seasonally appropriate songs and calls, always supported by photos of typical habitat types where each species is most likely to occur. The quiz-based format is a powerful learning tool for beginning birders like me. Highly recommended!
