Great Local Resources

We have collect a few references and resources here for your birding enjoyment and growth.

For over a decade, Greg Baker has been working on his book covering his interpretation of birding by general impression, entitled Good Birding by GIST. This is a recent draft of the preface and introductory chapter. The book will likely be released initially as an eBook. This portion is presented here to generate interest in his project, and to share with potential publishers.

Published in association with America’s preeminent authority, the Smithsonian Institution, this comprehensive handbook to the birds of North America: Eastern Region includes 706 species — all birds known to breed east of the 100th meridian on the United States and Canada, as well as regular visitors and vagrants to this region. The Smithsonian Handbook is the first identification guide that includes details of the bird’s life history in a concise and user-friendly format.

The checklist of Birds of Sauvie Island was compiled by local bird experts. This list depicts the seasonal presence and relative abundance of most species likely, or potentially present over the course of a year, winter, spring, summer and fall. It indicates which species nest on the island, and it presents a separate short list of species documented as rarely encountered on the island. This checklist is a must for birders visiting Sauvie Island for the first time, and for local birders.
